TROPHY hunters Crewe Alexandra just missed out on top spot in the national standings when they took their turn in the Paint Pot Challenge.

The Alex are looking good in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy northern area final following a 3-0 first leg victory over Coventry City last week.

And they kept their form up ahead of next week's second leg at Gresty Road by showing off their skills for the cameras at Reaseheath.

Ten players were asked to chip a ball from the corner of the 18-yard box into a giant inflatable paint pot stuck centrally on the six-yard line.

A perfect 'lick' for a successful chip-in is worth 10 points, while one point is awarded for each attempt which 'brushes' the paint pot.

Kelvin Mellor and Ryan Colclough both executed perfect attempts while five of their team-mates nudged the side of the target to give a total score of 25 points.

It was no surprise, however, that Max Clayton's cheeky basketball effort was disallowed.

Still, their efforts matched Coventry's tally, leaving both clubs tied in second place behind Oxford United (32 points) in a challenge which has been held around the country this season.

"As their score suggests, Crewe's efforts were among the best we have seen," said Ben Wilde, Johnstone's Paint brand and sponsorship manager.

"On top of their two perfect attempts, they also had a number of near misses which could have taken them into the lead.

"Along with reaching the northern area final, Crewe have had a memorable year in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and Paint Pot Challenge."

The winning team will receive £2,000 of Johnstone's Paint product to be used in a project around the club, with £1,000 and £500 on offer for the teams which finish second and third.

Crewe are in League One action tonight (7.45pm) when they take on high-flying Bournemouth at home.
