Crewe Alex fan zone: We now need snookers to escape drop

MANY years ago, away at Stockport County, a bunch of Alex fans started to sing Blue Moon on the Edgeley Park terraces. It was uplifting and very apt. The song was subsequently adopted as "our" tune.

Man City fans went on to claim it as their own and, being the bigger club, most assumed it belonged to the then Maine Road boys. We're not bitter!

Anyway, it's Stockport away for the Alex tonight, the first Friday fixture in ages.

A rousing rendition of Blue Moon might be just what's required to lift players and supporters from the gloom.

A disastrous sequence of results has plunged us into the bottom four once again and we need snookers. Our destiny as a club is no longer in supporters' hands – on or off the pitch.

While the players have struggled to score in recent weeks, the directors have been working on restructuring the club.

As ever, it has been shrouded in secrecy and only shareholders were invited to Thursday night's EGM.

It seems a strange time to do so, putting forward a motion to – potentially – hand over assets to a sub-company with just two games of the season remaining. Next thing you know, we'll be having to rent back our own ground!

It's all very well hearing club chairman John Bowler tell us that it's for the longer-term good of Crewe Alexandra, just excuse us for being a tad sceptical.

If this is a genuine attempt to keep the Alex secure we'll all be happy. But shouldn't the whole club be concentrating on staying in League One during these testing times?

Fans remain suspicious and, sadly, I don't see a happy ending.

But the focus should be on our final games.

A point at Stockport could be enough, providing we beat the champions on the final Saturday back at Gresty Road.

That could be a gamble too far, but with the scores level tonight you wonder if Gudjon will play it safe and take the point?

Sadly, goal difference could be our downfall, so a win-or-bust strategy could be the only option.

At least Stockport have nothing to play for, except end-of-season pride in front of their supporters.

I suspect we'll have to take what we can and hope others slip up.

It's all a far cry from February when we – and the gaffer – were kings, basking in the glory of a cracking sequence of results and a seemingly audacious escape.

So to slide back into trouble is gut-wrenching.

The possibility of League Two football is suddenly all too real when it looked as if we were safe.

Typically, and just as we have done in the past, the teams that had been written off have rallied and given themselves a fighting chance. Well done them.

Hopefully, we can still shatter their dreams, but that demands a season-defining performance from every player at Stockport.

If the Alex do not record a victory, you can forget the moon – we could be singing the blues by Saturday night.
