CREWE are hopeful Ashley Westwood will recover in time to face Aldershot this weekend, but skipper Dave Artell remains a major doubt.

Westwood, aged 22, was forced off with a swollen foot after he was stamped on 36 minutes into Crewe's 1-1 draw at Torquay on Saturday.

The central midfielder was at Reaseheath for treatment yesterday, and it is hoped X-rays will reveal that the injury is severe bruising rather than a fracture.

Central defender Artell was cheerleader in chief on the sidelines at Plainmoor because of a hamstring problem which also threatens his participation in Saturday's season finale at Gresty Road.

But the Railwaymen may have one eye on ensuring the 31-year-old is 100 per cent fit for any play-off campaign, with the first semi-final the following weekend.

Assistant manager Neil Baker said: "When Ashley came in yesterday the swelling had gone down considerably, but we needed X-rays to see the extent of the damage.

"We are all hoping he will be ready to go on Saturday.

"Dave is improving all the time, but I don't expect him to be ready for Aldershot."

Baker was escorted to the stand against Torquay for running out of his technical area to celebrate Nick Powell's 93rd minute leveller.

He said: "The concern for me was that in the midst of celebrating I managed to overtake Dave Artell."
