PLYMOUTH outcast Simon Walton is understood to be a loan target again for Crewe.

The 21-year-old midfielder turned down a move to the Alexandra Stadium in November, shortly before first-team coach Steve Holland was sacked. But the ex-Leeds and QPR youngster has since been told he can leave Home Park.

Walton, who has a reputation for his tough-tackling, was transfer-listed after being sent off against Barnsley in December for kicking out at the Tykes' Anderson De Silva.

After capturing experienced defender Marlon Broomes and keeper John Ruddy, Gudjon Thordarson is not ruling out brokering further loan deals before the transfer window closes on Monday.

He would then have to wait another seven days before he could resume his quest to strengthen his relegation-threatened side via the emergency loan market.

But Thordarson insists his players first have the opportunity to persuade him to act otherwise by winning today's vital home clash with Tranmere.

"We might see something done before Monday, but the priority for me was to bring in a goalkeeper and centre-half," said the Crewe boss.

"If the players are available I might try to make a move, but my players have got a chance to go out and show me there is no need for anyone else."

Keeper Ruddy says he is looking forward to playing his first competitive match of the season.

After a successful loan spell with Stockport in 2007/2008, the Everton youngster has been restricted to just two reserve outings this term.

Ruddy said: "It has been very frustrating for me and I am just delighted to get the opportunity to get some games in, particularly as Crewe play eight games this month.

"I have seen Crewe's results and they are conceding a lot of goals, so if I can stop the rot then I will be doing my job."

Thordarson revealed his relationship with Toffees' boss David Moyes helped oil the wheels of Ruddy's deal, which is initially for one month.

He said: "I first got to know Davey when I was national manager of Iceland. He knows there is no bull with me and that John will be looked after here. John has got a presence and we can help him grow stronger."

Meanwhile, midfielder Luke Murphy is back in training, while club captain Julien Baudet should be available again today after suspension, despite turning his ankle in training.

BRITISH Gas League Division One Midlands side Chesham United say their young striker Danny Burnell will train with Crewe next week.
