(Dalla Valle 5, Pogba 71)
LAURI Dalla Valle scored one of the quickest goals for any new Crewe player when he set the Alex on the way to victory with an opportunist fifth-minute strike.
The Finnish forward, signed on loan from Fulham 24 hours earlier, outpaced the home defence to latch on to a magnificent through-ball from Chuks Aneke finish in fine style.
Mathias Pogba added a second after the break to seal a fine victory, ending Rovers' seven-match unbeaten run, and gaining the club's first win at Doncaster for more than 20 years.
Doncaster: Woods, Quinn, Husband, Jones (Martis, 27), Spurr, Syers (Blake, 46), Woods, Harper (Brown, 75), Keegan, Paynter, Hume. Not used: Sullivan, Griffin, Clingan.
Crewe: Martin, Tootle, Davis, Ellis, Murphy, Mellor, Osman, Aneke (Robertson, 89), Pogba, Moore (West, 46), Dalla Valle. Not used: Phillips, Dugdale, Ray, Turton, Daniels.
Attendance: 5,411.
FORM GUIDE
Crewe: WWLDWL
Doncaster: LWWWWL
WHO WE'D LIKE TO BUY
David Cotterill: The 24-year-old wide man has been Rovers' top summer signing, scoring eight goals and creating plenty more with crosses and set-piece deliveries. A real dangerman who can operate on either flank.
WHO TO BOO
Billy Paynter: Scored 34 goals in five-and-a-half years at Port Vale and will be a target for wind-ups if he is fit to play, particularly having been sent off twice against Crewe Alexandra in the past.
MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Trevor Kettle (Rutland): Certainly did the Alex no favours when he took charge of a the Johnstone's Paint Trophy northern area final second leg against Doncaster in 2007.
PROBABLE TEAMS
Crewe: Phillips, Tootle, Robertson, Davis, Dugdale, West, Murphy, Inman, Pogba, Clayton, Dalla Valle.
Doncaster: Woods, Quinn, Spurr, Jones, Martis, Cotterill, Syers, Clingan, Husband, Hume, Brown.
PREDICTION
Rob Jones scores with two headers from set-pieces for Doncaster in the first half, but Max Clayton marks his first-team return with a hat-trick in an eventual 3-2 win to send Crewe through.
