CREWE'S only goal-less draw of 2006 gave the club's battle against relegation a massive shot in the arm.

The pendulum of fortune swung in the Alex's favour when Adie Akinbiyi wasn't awarded a penalty when he had his route to goal blocked off by new boy Madjid Bougherra.

But in fact, it was the Railwaymen who had the better chances.

Gareth Taylor hit the side-netting after he was put clear by Bougherra's defence-splitting pass in the 38th minute.

And that was where Luke Rodgers deposited a late far-post volley, too, after Steve Jones's cross had looped kindly via a deflection on to his right boot.

Sheffield United: Kenny, Morgan, Armstrong, Geary, Jagielka, Bromby (Montgomery, 63), Flitcroft, Quinn (Ifill, 52), Gillespie (Kabba, 72), Akinbiyi, Webber. Not used: Kozluk, Horsfield.

Crewe: Turnbull, Jones, Foster, Ostemobor, Bougherra, Lunt, Bell, Grant, Jones, Rodgers, Taylor (Higdon, 71). Not used: Tomlinson, McCready, Walker, O'Connor.

Attendance: 22,691.
