Crewe Alex: Experienced Steve Phillips prepared for Taylor battle
STEVE Phillips says he is relishing the battle with Rhys Taylor for the number one jersey when he resumes full training later this month, writes Jon Owen.
The 32-year-old has been forced to watch from the sidelines this season as he recovers from summer surgery to repair cartilage tears in his shoulders.
Taylor, who is set to start at Stevenage tomorrow (3pm), has been ever-present after joining on loan from Chelsea and Crewe are looking to extend his initial two-month deal.
"Rhys has done very well. He obviously has something about him," said Phillips, "but I'm aiming to return to full training by the end of the month and then play a reserve game.
"And once I'm over that final hurdle, it'll be a case of 'bring on the competition'."
The former Bristol Rovers keeper admits he hasn't spoken to boss Dario Gradi about whether he will make an instant return into the first team.
"I know there is competition, but I'm at an age where I need to be starting games," added Phillips.
"I'll sit down with Dario and we'll talk about it.
"I've been doing a lot of strength work on my shoulders and the physios here have been first class. The main focus is to get back to full fitness and take it from there."
