Midfielder Lowry won a lot of admirers in his two months in South Cheshire.

But the 25-year-old was also shown the door after parent club Chesterfield also slipped back into League Two.

Both play in positions the Crewe management team are looking to bolster ahead of their return to League One on August 18. And assistant boss Neil Baker made no secret of the fact their names had been up for discussion.

He said: "With Dave Artell being released we will be getting a centre-half in, and James Tunnicliffe is among two or three we are considering for there.

"We have talked about Lowry too, but there have been others as well."
