Crewe Alex: Defender McManus goes AWOL
by Gwyn Griffiths
MYSTERY surrounds the whereabouts of Crewe defender Scott McManus who has gone AWOL after returning on loan to Curzon Ashton.

The 20-year-old defender, who impressed during Gudjon Thordarson's reign at Gresty Road, has had no contact with the UniBond League Division One North outfit since playing a handful of games for them in early October.
McManus made six appearances for Crewe when Thordarson was manager, but is believed to have been beset by personal problems.
It was agreed McManus should spend a month's loan back at Curzon Ashton, whom Crewe had paid a small fee for his signature in the summer of 2008 – but the Manchester club's boss, Gary Lowe, admitted: "We can't locate him.
"Scott played a couple of games for us and then just went missing. His numbers have changed and we haven't been able to contact him. We don't know where he is."
The former Manchester United junior was recruited by former Crewe boss Steve Holland after beating off competition from Nottingham Forest.
But it was Thordarson who spotted his potential in defensive and attacking roles down the left side later in the campaign.
He made his debut at Swindon last April and his stunning long-range strike at Stockport offered Crewe hope of salvation before they lost their vital relegation clash 4-3 later that month.
McManus signed a two-year deal on his arrival at Gresty Road, but it is understood Crewe will seek to terminate the contract next month in January.
"Crewe paid us money to take him," added Lowe, "but sometimes it can be too big for these lads."
"Scott had all the ability in the world, and his fitness and physique were unbelievable."
"He was a good prospect, but then if you've not got what it takes mentally then it can be too much for you. For whatever reasons that seems to have been the case with him."
Midfielder Ashley Westwood, who was an injury doubt (knee) for the postponed weekend clash with Torquay, will be fit for the visit of League Two leaders Rochdale on Boxing Day.
Striker Shaun Miller , back in training after a protracted (groin problem), could also be under consideration.
