Crewe Alex: Boro new boys a major threat, warns Donaldson
CLAYTON Donaldson has warned his Crewe team-mates to expect a tough test from Blue Square Premier champions Stevenage Borough tomorrow (3pm), writes Jon Owen.
The Alex striker is well aware Graham Westley's men have the ability to mix it with the best teams in League Two, especially on their home ground.
"Just because they were in the Blue Square last season doesn't mean we can afford to go there thinking it'll be a walk over," said Donaldson as he prepared for the first ever competitive clash between the two sides.
"I've played at that level and know there are a number of teams with the ability to cause a lot of problems.
"Stevenage were champions last season, and you've seen teams in the past come up from that level into the Football League and go on to challenge for promotion straight away."
Borough have had a solid start to life in the Football League, recording one win, two draws and a solitary defeat to sit 10th in the table.
However, they drew at Aldershot last week and then lost 1-0 at home to Brentford in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Tuesday night.
The latter defeat prompted Westley to lock his players in their dressing room for a post-match discussion.
Borough will be further weakened tomorrow by the loss of first-choice strike duo Charlie Griffin and Chris Beardsley.
Griffin sustained a face injury at Aldershot while Beardsley's arm is in plaster after he fell awkwardly during the Brentford loss.
Among those who will be playing tomorrow is Stevenage captain Mark Roberts, who started his career at Crewe in 2003 and made five first-team appearances before moving to Northwich Victoria in 2007.
Donaldson has had an impressive start to the new campaign for Crewe, but reckons there could be even better still to come.
The 26-year-old has already scored twice for Dario Gradi's side playing either on the right of a front three or in the central striker's role.
He added: "I've been happy with my form so far, but I still don't think I'm quite at a 100 per cent fitness wise, so hopefully there is more to come from me."
Donaldson is also taking in his stride Gradi's willingness to change his forward line.
He said: "As long as I'm playing, that's all I'm bothered about.
"But it's a good option to have because we can switch to a 4-4-2 formation if we need to.
"Calvin Zola's return from injury this weekend also gives us real options up front.
"We've got plenty of forwards who all want to start, and that's a good thing for us all.
"Nobody can afford to let their standards slip.
"But on our day, all of us have the ability to cause teams damage.
"That was reflected in the 7-0 win against Barnet. It's nice to know we can do that."
