Councillors forgetting their role.
Councillors are directly elected to represent the people and therefore have to consider not just the interests of their local electorate, but those throughout the whole City, to create a harmonious local environment.
Councillors are not elected to pick faults with members of opposing political groups, in attacking the opposition for failing to call a decision in, Labour Councillors have ignored for the 2nd time over 4000 of their electorate, who have signed petitions.
-

Opposition Councillors may well have been in favour of the original decision and hence had no reason to question it, but when presented with clear evidence of a public outcry deemed the decision required further scrutiny.
Labour Councillors could have seized this opportunity to re-engage with the public and show they are prepared to listen, in dismissing the electorate in such an off hand fashion, they have again further distanced residents from the political process, people are already saying they can see no point in voting next time. This decision can only worsen that situation and create record low turnout in 2015.

“Councillors forgetting their role, no they are just following type. They all think that there office is their to give them the power and the right to do as they please when in fact their office is there so that they serve the electorate.
This state of affairs has come about mainly due to the apathy and sheep like qualities of the people of Stoke-on-Trent. Will it change? I doubt it because when the elections come around all will be forgiven and forgotten and the same sycophants will get re-elected.
It is criminal not only for the city but also for the people who want change when the same bunch of incompetent fools will be given the freedom to do as they please again.”

“One of the big problems with the good folk of Stoke is that, though they will protest, they will settle back down again and allow matters to continue, against their better judgment.
The main reason for this state of affairs is a lack of strong leadership, (more than one brave soul), acting together. We also seem willing to laugh at trivial insults against the guilty few (see the jests about Council leaders watching naughty films, below) followed by "we told 'em" apathy.
"Come the hour, come the men" is a well-used adage. I would suggest, with due respect to all of you who care about this issue, that our very necessary leadership has not yet emerged.”

“When they want your vote, they will come knocking. Then you won't see them for another few years until they wan't your vote again. Why is that? They are not interested in what you have to say on the important issues to knock on your door, so why come knocking when it suits. Why did not the Labour councillors canvas their wards? Mind you, it still would be a secret if they did, you would not no what the truth was. This is where we are at now. TRUST, AND WE DON'T, NOW OR EVER WILL AGAIN. The last time i saw my councillor was, when they came around canvasing for the Police Commissioner vote. My only disappointment was that they did not knock on my door. I was ready for them, so to speak. The first and last time I've seen him. Seen more of the invisible man.”

“Most people make the mistake of confusing the theory of democracy with what actually happens in practice.
The theory is of course that those who are elected should represent the views of the majority of people in their constituency, not their own views - unless they coincide. If they find they can't represent the peoples views then, on principle, they should admit it and resign if they cannot persuade the people to their point of view.
In practice what happens is a complete travesty of democracy.
They tout for votes by trying to persuade people that their personal (or Party) view of given situations is the right one, together with rosy promises of what will be done if they are elected - avoiding as many issues as possible in the process.
When they are elected, a dictatorship is enacted for whatever period they were elected for, and they do whatever they (or their party) wish. Occasionally they will upset the population sufficiently to cause unrest and will be persuaded to modify their actions just sufficiently to appease the people.
How you change this, I don't know, but soon I think, it will have to change - the people will want it so.”

“@ captain swing Quite agree however, it should happen and the sooner the better for everyone including Pervez (he can get back to his chemistry kit), Van der Laughing Stock (he can get off back to the South Coast and carry on his wife swapping ordeals.( have you seen it HOW EMBARRASSING, when in company one has to admit that your Council leader was involved in a voyeuristic entertainment programme and it seems to be stuck in a loop on Sky TV) oh the sheer shame of it.

“When 'the winds of change' fast become a hurricane, which is what is happening in the City given the crisis of trust and support for the political class, things can happen quickly. We can not wait until 2015 can we? Politicians within the Labour group and the party must be aware that their own support out there with the electorate is diminishing to zero. The pressure should be on then to remove the three main Council leaders and the CEO from power. That can happen in a volatile climate such as this.

“I'm determined to remind every councillor, especially the Labour group, that they represent US, and OUR wishes should be paramount in their thoughts.
I'm also going to remind them that, not only are they merely 32 individuals in a city of 250,000, but their entire Labour group locally has fewer than 200 people.
Now, I don't know about you .... but fewer than 200 against 250,000 isn't really good odds to start picking a fight.”
