Council chief backs store expansion probe
THE leader of Newcastle Borough Council has welcomed the decision to hold a public inquiry into a supermarket's expansion plans.
Simon Tagg, right, said he was pleased at the decision as allowing Tesco to expand its Trent Vale store would affect Newcastle traders.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council approved the retail giant's planning application, against the advice of its own officers, in September.
And, as described in yesterday's Sentinel, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government John Denham has now announced there will be a public inquiry.

Tesco first submitted an application to increase its store size by three quarters, or 9,383 square metres, in August 2008. But the plans raised objections and Mr Tagg said it "should never have been allowed".
He added: "It would affect Newcastle town centre's viability as a retail centre when we are pushing to improve it."

“Yes,I agree about consulting ratepayers about proposals.Take for example newcastle borough council they have deemed fit to add this next month or so a whole raft of recycling bins of various colours and sizes, effectively converting my garden into an extension of a council yard .To add further injury the food bins delivered yesterday come with corn starch bags which when used I get a list of suppliers where I can purchase more from.As far as I am concerned I do not work for the council and any purchases I make ,should be already paid for out of the rates I pay.To newcastle council I say your recycling bins will be at the end of the entry if you want to fill them please feel free to do so you are not going to make my garden look like a tip”
