AN 'UPBEAT' Mark Meredith is still working on key policies to drive Stoke-on-Trent forward and will hold on to his £69,000-a-year elected mayor title.

The 43-year-old has stepped down from all his major political roles as he fights to clear his name over what he calls "unfounded and politically motivated" allegations against him.

But he is still working on key housing, sport and leisure policies for Stoke-on-Trent.

Mr Meredith had been questioned by police on Friday after being arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and complicity in corruption in public office.

The elected mayor was back at the Civic Centre this morning for crisis talks about his future with interim council manager Chris Harman.

Following this morning's meeting, Mr Harman said: "Clearly it has been a difficult weekend for him but I would say he was upbeat and very concerned for the future of the city. I will be sending a message out to staff today to update them."

Now deputy elected mayor Mohammed Pervez is stepping into power less than three years after being voted on to the city council.

In a statement, Mr Meredith said last night: "I am innocent of any wrongdoing and am confident this investigation will show that. I need time to spend on fighting to clear my name."

Last night's decision means Mr Pervez becomes chairman of the council's decision-making executive and members board. He has also today been appointed the latest portfolio holder for children and young people's services.

Mr Meredith had held the position for just six days following the arrest of previous post-holder Roger Ibbs as part of the same police probe into plans to close the splash pool at Dimensions leisure centre, in Burslem.

But it is not yet clear who will replace Mr Meredith as chairman of North Staffordshire Regeneration Partnership.

Mr Meredith – who is bailed until June – has also asked to suspend his Labour Party membership.

He added: "In order to minimise any potential negative impact on my party I am asking for an administrative suspension until my position is vindicated."

Mr Pervez today vowed to do his best. He said: "I will support the elected mayor in making sure Stoke-on-Trent is run effectively and efficiently."

Group leaders on the council were due to discuss the fall-out of Mr Meredith's arrest at a meeting today.

Potteries Alliance leader councillor Peter Kent-Baguley said: "I can understand why Mr Meredith has resigned from these positions, but I find it strange that he wishes to retain the nominal title of elected mayor having given up all the responsibilities associated with the post."

Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Mark Fisher said: "It's the right and responsible thing to do as it allows Chris Harman to assume responsibility."

Newly-appointed Conservative and Independent Alliance leader councillor Ross Irving said: "I think this was the right decision for Mark to take.

"It is unfortunate, but it is the best way forward."
