Concern over rise in suicide
PUBLIC health officials are to look into why the suicide rate in North Staffordshire is rising sharply.
They have stepped in after figures issued by the area's coroner's office showed 29 suicide verdicts were recorded during the first-half of this year compared to 25 for the whole of 2011.
Mental health trust Combined Healthcare said the increase reflected a national rise and the recession had been partly blamed for it.
Now Stoke-on-Trent public health director Professor Zafar Iqbal and his counterpart in the rest of Staffordshire, Dr Aliko Ahmed, are to examine if more deaths can be prevented.
