BIN IT! Eco-friendly residents will be encouraged to start composting their household waste.

Experts working with Stoke-on-Trent City Council will be out and about from May 3 to 10 raising awareness of composting and its benefits as part of National Compost Week.

Long-term allotment holder John Sigley, pictured, who has had his patch at Cheadle Road in Leek for more than 20 years, is backing the scheme.

The 66-year-old, of Prince Street in Leek, said: "I have composted for many years and save everything. It's important and it makes the best compost for the garden."

A display stall will be in Hanley's Tontine Square, from 10am to 4pm, on May 5. It will be in Leek market on May 6 and Stafford's Market Square on May 7. Compost bins will be available at a subsidised cost.
