The Sentinel

IT WAS with great sadness that we read the article headlined "OAP died in 'pile of bikes' at his home" (Sentinel, January 22) because the man in question, John Davies, was a dear cousin of ours. Although he had sadly become the eccentric person described, we remember John as a perfectly normal, happy-go-lucky, mischievous child until the tragedy that happened to him when he was 12 years old – when he was shot several times with an air rifle.

John was badly injured and this resulted in him losing an eye, and that incident changed him forever. He became a totally different person; introverted, reclusive, and lacking any confidence.

This got progressively worse over the years until he became the sad person described in the article, shunning any help offered, even from his sister, who never gave up on him.

John faced ridicule and hostility many times in his life because of the way he was and the way he lived, but we want people to realise this could happen to any of us, and we should treat such people with compassion, not derision.
