The 100th anniversary of the sinking RMS Titanic will be commemorated in a city museum from next weekend with a display exploring the links between Stoke-on-Trent and the doomed ocean liner.

Titanic Trail displays will be set out around the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery where visitors can find out about Hanley born Captain Smith, and see the loving cup which was presented to him.

There will also be archive film showing him on board Titanic's sister ship the Olympic. Captain Smith, however, was not the only local person on board the tragic liner and visitors can view information boards about other locals lost to the sea that night.

Other displays will feature reproductions of several commemorative ceramic works and show the links between the ship and the potteries industry.

Follow the Titanic Trail around the museum and read the information boards to capture a glimpse into the story of the most famous ship in history.

Councillor Mark Meredith, cabinet member for economic development, said: "This world famous story has captured the imagination of generations of people ever since the events of that night in April 1912. This city has extremely close links with the ship and this display gives us the chance to explore some of these."

The displays will open on Saturday February 11 and close on Monday December 31, 2012.
