MEMBERS of five rotary clubs hope to raise thousands of pounds for charity by touring the towns of the Potteries.

The Six Towns Challenge, in aid of the Donna Louise Trust, takes place on May 9, and has been set up by paraplegic Martin Kettrick.

Mr Kettrick, president of the Blythe Bridge and District rotary club, has been confined to a wheelchair for 30 years, and will be joined by nine other wheelchair users for the task. They will start in Tunstall before pushing their wheelchairs into Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and on to the finish in Longton.

Fellow rotary club member Michael Price said: "The idea is there will be one wheelchair in a group of 10 and the other nine people will be collecting. We hope to raise between £5,000 and £8,000."

Other rotary clubs taking part are Longton, Burslem, Tunstall and Stoke-on-Trent.

“I was glad to see the vast improvements made to Hanley Park. I lived in Beresford Street as a child, and attended Cauldon Road School, the park was our main playground.
When I last visited Stoke, in 1996, I was disgusted with the park, so run down and neglected. Are there still rowing boats on the lake? Is there a written history of the park? I remember vegetables being grown there during the war and the 'old mens hut" (as we boys called it) being built next to the playground, where the swings etc were all locked up each Sunday. Keep up the good work.”
