POTTERY giant Wedgwood is to create a bespoke trophy for a national charity golf competition.

The National Golf Club Challenge aims to raise more than £1 million for Help for Heroes, which supports servicemen and women injured in the line of duty.

Craftsmen at Wedgwood's base at Barlaston are to design and produce the trophy for the amateur competition, which takes place in July.

Event director Stacey Jeffries said: "The name of Wedgwood has been associated for many years with some of the finest trophies in golf.

"So what better way to reward the 2010 National Golf Club Challenge winners than with a fantastic trophy made by the incredibly skilled Wedgwood craftsmen? The trophy will be a fitting end to the 2010 challenge and a phenomenal addition to any club's awards cabinet."

Wedgwood, now part of WWRD after it was bought out of administration last year, has had a long association with professional golf, including producing World Golf Championship trophies for the U.S. PGA.

Gerry O'Keeffe, WWRD manager for sports and special markets, said: "That association, together with a proud tradition of giving back to the community, had led to our collaboration with the National Golf Club Challenge in aid of the Help for Heroes foundation."

Hundreds of golf clubs from across the UK will be taking part in the challenge on the weekend of July 24 and 25.

The Sentinel reported last week that Wedgwood and sister brand Royal Doulton had been chosen to produce commemorative souvenirs for the London Olympic Games.
