HEALTH Secretary Andy Burnham has bolstered Labour's election campaigning in Crewe and Nantwich.

Mr Burnham was taken on a tour of the Eagle Bridge Health Centre, in Crewe, along with constituency Labour candidate David Williams.

The £10 million health centre, which contains GP surgeries as well as dentistry, podiatry, physiotherapy and speech therapy services, opened in January 2008.

Mr Burnham said it was an example of how the NHS had improved because of investment under New Labour.

He said: "I think the health centre here is fantastic. It's a great statement of what a modern NHS should provide.

"Labour has a record to be proud of in Crewe and Nantwich. The North has not been persuaded by Mr Cameron, so we have a great chance here. We have an opportunity to get a good local candidate like David into Parliament."

Conservative MP Edward Timpson won Crewe and Nantwich in the 2008 by-election which followed the death of Labour veteran Gwyneth Dunwoody.

It is widely seen as one of the crucial swing seats which could help determine the result of the General Election.

Lib Dem candidate Roy Wood and independent Mike Parsons will also be standing on May 6.
