NEWCASTLE surrendered joint leadership of Midlands Three West (North) after slipping to a surprise 32-19 defeat in Birmingham against Yardley & District.

First-half tries from Ben Walker and Ollie Smalley left the game evenly poised at 12-12 by the break.

But Newcastle's fate was effectively sealed by a disastrous period in the second half when they conceded 20 points without response.

And so it was little more than consolation when Matt Hobson crashed over in the corner for a late try converted by Ronan Evans.

ECCLESHALL, though, caused something of a shock with an impressive 36-24 home victory against high-flying Bloxwich.
