AN ASSISTANT headteacher has been nominated for an award for her outstanding work in the school and community.

Rebecca Butler, pictured, has been put forward in the Adult School Star category of the Staffordshire Moorlands Community Awards.

Jason Phillips, headteacher at Kingsfield First School in Biddulph, has nominated his colleague for her dedication to teaching and her involvement with the public in the town.

He said: "Mrs Butler is outstanding in both engaging with the wider community, and dealing closely with parents and children."

Rebecca's involvement in teaching started due to the love of seeing students develop academically.

Working with nursery and reception age children at Kingsfield First School for 16 years, Rebecca was promoted to assistant headteacher in 2007.

Alongside teaching, she has instigated the establishment of the, "Kingsfield Safe and Well Surgery" which works closely with police and housing officers, alongside the school nurse.

The surgery is open once a month, after school hours, to allow time for the parents of Kingsfield First School's students to raise concerns and issues that they may have, not only with the school but also with police and housing officers.

In response to the nomination, Rebecca said: "I'm very surprised and flattered, although the project is not something I've done on my own. It's success is definitely due in part to the support of my colleagues and those institutions involved. It's wonderful that through the use of the surgery, we are able to give parents the opportunity to solve three to four problems at once instead of making separate appointments to air their concerns."

There are plans to eventually make the surgery available everyone in the Biddulph area.
