LEEK
Pensioner David Mathias has pleaded guilty to a number of sexual offences. The 68-year-old, of Union Street, Leek, admitted six charges of sexual assault of a child under 13 and one charge of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity. He will be sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court after a report is prepared on him by a probation officer. Mathias was bailed but told not to take that as an indication of sentence.

STOKE-ON-TRENT
James Merricks, aged 29, has denied a string of sexual offences. Merricks, of no fixed address, denied five charges of rape and one charge of indecent assault. His trial will be held at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on April 15. Merricks was remanded in custody.
