STOKE City are reported to be keeping tabs on Houston Dynamo central defender Geoff Cameron.

The president of the Major League Soccer club, Chris Canetti, confirmed that Stoke had made an inquiry about the 26-year-old centre-half who can also play in midfield.

He said: "I would say some dialogue has opened up in terms of what it might take to get it done.

"I don't know how serious they are or if they're just kicking the tyres. Right now there's just initial dialogue that's starting up."

Everton and Bundesliga outfit FC Schalke 04 have also been linked with the 6ft 3in defender who has five caps for the United States.

Cameron has made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League.

He said: "I wouldn't mind England. I've always wanted to play there. I'm not going to be picky.

"I would love England. I think just overall the soccer there and the fan experience and just everything in general would be great."

If Stoke decided to follow up their interest in Cameron, they would have to buy his contract from the MLS.

Figures released by the MLS show Cameron earns an annual basic salary of £147,545, or £2,837 per week.

Stoke are under less pressure to bring in a central defender after Robert Huth signed a contract extension which commits him to the club for the next four years.

Jonathan Woodgate is also expected to stay at the Britannia Stadium having been offered a new one-year deal. But City could be prepared to let Matthew Upson move on in search of regular first-team football.

Upson is under contract for another 12 months and made a positive impression after signing on a free transfer from West Ham last summer.

Stoke wouldn't release Upson in January to join Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua, but they could reconsider in the close season now they have more time to rebuild.

Newly-promoted Southampton have been heavily linked with the defender, who started 19 games for City last season, but only 10 in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Wolves' chief executive Jez Moxey poured cold water on speculation that Stoke are about to move for winger Matt Jarvis, below.

City were thought to be monitoring Jarvis's situation as they look for competition for Jermaine Pennant and Matthew Etherington.

However, Moxey has rubbished speculation that an £8m deal for the 26-year-old is imminent, declaring: "They have not even spoken to us about him."

STOKE will play FC Sion on July 19 at the end of a five-day training camp in Switzerland.

Tony Pulis has included the trip to replace the club's traditional summer training mission in Austria.

The FC Sion game will take place in Montreux and is due to kick off at 7pm local time.

City begin a week-long tour of the United States with a game against Columbus Crew on July 24. Stoke also take on Orlando City on July 28 and Sporting Kansas City on August 1.

They return to England with games at Torquay United on August 6 and Yeovil Town on August 7.

    “Here's a reason why Stoke may be closing in on Cameron. Jonathon Woodgate has decided to leave Stoke and join Boro on a free transfer. Woody was born in Middlesborough so it makes good sense.

    Personally I'll be sorry to see him go. He's a class act and we never played him to his strengths except maybe in his first month or two here. After that he was thrown about as a stop gap and didn't do that well.”

    “Plus you ignored/forgot my argument about not impressing in training, which I believe is a vaild argument even if it means that the fans do not see the players is action.”

    “Every club and every manager signs players who don't hack it and some pay a lot more for them than Stoke paid for the likes of Soares, Tongue etc. Torres didn't do it at Chelsea, Carroll has by and large been rubbish so far, Shevchenko didn't do it at Chelsea, Bridge, Wright Philips and many more at Man City, Veron at Utd. I could go on all night. This is just another attempt to have a pop at Stoke by someone who does it on a daily basis and yet claims to be a supporter.”

    “dope, what are you mumbling about ??? oh yeah, the "what a knob" saying you have fallen in love with. did you get that from the 10 yr old that lives next door .However, forgive me if you are 10 yr old, its so hard to tell by the things you say to people.

    Cptfurious, i honestly can not say that I have ever seen Davies Tonge and Soares etc play a full game, or even half a game for that matter, so i cant pass judgement if they are good or not! I did watch Arismendi play in a Europa league game last season and he looked pretty decent. but just 1 game, how is that enough time to show anything. As i said, how a player plays after leaving Stoke has no bearing whatsoever on what he could have done for SCFC. Fernando Torres and Andy Carroll were very good for Liverpool and Newcastle but are terrible for Chelsea and Liverpool, but at least they have been given the chance to play to show that they are terrible. Basically my point is that when you have a team as short on talent as SCFC, pulling in the mediocre results we do, giving these players an immediate chance to show something should be considered instead of loaning them out. I can imagine that Arismendi, as highly regarded as he was and the 3 million we paid for him had his heart on playing for Stoke City FC in the premier league, not thrown out to some lower level nobody team so he can "get used" to English football.Our own manager isnt even used to English football.”

    “DJ_Stoke, what I actually wrote was;
    "I implore you not to waste your time by watching Stoke. Some of us are unfortunate enough to have to support Stoke, it being our local team and all. (Said in jest before I start getting the barrage of negative comments)." Christ, if it's not soccerfoot completely misquoting me I've now got you para-phrasing. Did you not notice the bit in brackets? I thought I'd made it clear by physically stating my intention after my initial remark to clarify it's meant intention, but it looks like I need to clarify/simplify it further; IT WAS A JOKE! A tongue in cheek remark meant to parody the perceived notion in the press (supported by a little bit of truth it has to be said) that at times we do play VERY boring football. (I think Villa on boxing day was the worst I've ever seen).

    I don't usually reply to replies, unless adding further comments to the article, because I hate it when these comment boards get swamped with personal battles (usually reminiscent of a primary school playground "you're a dope", "no you're a knob") but I've made special dispensation this time. Get a grip man, and loosen up a little bit before you give yourself a heart attack.”

    “Soccerfoot;
    Davies, Tonge, Soares & Arismendi all are very very average at best, they have had numerous chances to shine on loan as well as fleeting 1st team appearances and have failed to impress.

    Gudjohnsen & Tuncay have gone on to show that although they may have had isolated moments of brilliance (I'm talking more Tuncay here obviously) they can't consistently perform to their best at other clubs either. Which indicates that Stoke weren't the problem.

    Jerome is perhaps your only valid argument. He did consistently prove, when given opportunity that he had pace, skill and a half decent finish. My only question to this is that he did tend to perform better when brought on later in games against tired legs. Totally agree that he should have played more, still not convinced that he's a 90 minute player.

    With Cuvelier however you're completely off the mark. All the big teams loan out their young players for 1st team experience. Only a very very rare few make a premier league first team impact at a young age. Cuvelier wasn't dazzling in the Stoke reserves matches so he went out on loan to League 1 Walsall and sparkled. This year he's likely to go out on loan to a Championship club where he can go one step further to proving he can mix it with the big boys of the Premier League, or alternatively play a bit part role for the 1st team. As much as it is frustrating to have to wait to see these young players make an impact it is universally excepted that this is the way to do it.

    Hope this clears my views up for you?”

    “Don't think I have missed the point here sf. You're looking at this from such a simple angle that you buy a player and then they play for the club. If you signed three players and in the days before the big kick-off, you realised that they couldn't kick a ball based in training, would you still give them a game? Obviously they could all kick a ball, but just humour the point I'm making. For example the first training session with Gudjohnsen, Pulis may have seen that his age was taking its toll and that he can't run around and chase the ball as perhaps Walters will who is a few years younger, or perhaps with Tuncay he may have realised that he wouldn't (willingly) track back and help out in defence. These are all possible explanations, obviously, but would you rather him playing players he knows he can trust or taking the risk of playing a player that may not perform for whatever reason simply because he hasn't had a chance?”
