Review: Burlesque, The Leopard Hotel, Burslem (VIDEO)
Stoke-on-Trent Burlesque The Leopard Hotel, Burslem
WELL, there are not many occasions when I am rendered speechless, but Saturday night was one of them, as I was presented with 'a bevvy of Burlesque beauties' in Burslem.
The story behind Stoke-on-Trent Burlesque lies with its organiser, Scarlett Fever.
Scarlett was apparently taught burlesque by none other than Dita Von Tesse.

The show is marketed as 'tease without the sleaze', and while these girls are no doubt talented and well taught, the fact remains that at the end of the act, they wiggle their … erm … assets.
I was apprehensive, to say the least, about what the evening would entail and was more than surprised to see a healthy number of women in the audience.
Seven scantily-clad ladies were on stage in curious outfits – curious as one outfit involved a horse's head and another a parody of The Sound of Music.
To bring a feeling of variety to the evening, Stoke-on-Trent Burlesque also featured a magic act – Advocates of Deception. It was two cheeky chaps who, to my relief, took a little of the strangeness of the evening away.
The evening was essentially a great night of entertainment, particularly if you'd partaken of a few alcoholic beverages beforehand.
While the girls retained the tongue-in-cheek attitude, it was easy to play along – but one or two of the dancers gave a more serious performance, which left me feeling slightly uncomfortable and unsure of where to look. Stoke-on-Trent Burlesque is fantastic if you have absolutely no inhibition.

“What a fabulously eclectic range of neo-burlesque acts on offer. The evening was a joy from start to finish and for me it embodied all that is so empowering and life affirming about this scene.
The night had everything from classic striptease, through to comedy and surrealist mayhem.
This evening painted a rich picture of modern burlesque to me! What an intellectually and culturally poverty stricken scene burlesque would be if it was constrained by narrow definitions.
The overwhelming success of the night is evident. With still 8 weeks to go the tickets are all but sold out again for the December show. Many of the tickets have been snapped up by members of the audience from Saturday night eager for another wonderful night's entertainment. Roll on December yayeeeeeeee!!”

“Not to butt in on an event that i didn't attend but i just want to say well done to everyone... i have heard nothing but good things about this show (obviously with the one exception on this bulletin, but let's face it, there will always be one person who doesn't get it and misses the spirit the show is done in, and as Miss Anon said she will be doing herself and everyone else a favour by not returning).
So well done to everyone who participated especially those lovely girls making their first steps in the art form.
Oh and Warren, it isn't usual for burlesque dancers to use a pole (although i'm sure there is probably someone out there who does)... asking burlesque performers to break out the poles is a bit like asking a footballer to play rugby, they're two different things!
Much love to all

“Is anyone else confused by this video? Cheer leader, ballon seller, bloke doing bad Dad dancing and big pants ?
Not surprised Vicki was rendered speechless.”

“This was a really good night out and I don't know what some people expected in a pub, in Stoke for just £15 - they obviously thought that they'd get a West End show magically transported from London. But each to their own, the acts were all very different. I loved the balloon pop girl and the fox hunting pair the best but all were very talented”

“Im not sure what the reporter expected as burlesque has traditionally always been risque ( down to the tassels) and has always attracted a female following too.
Horses head though! that does seem more fetish or even Godfather! Both the reporter and anon, a paying customer after all, are entitled to an opinion. The only one who seems "bitter and twisted" is Mr Peter D?, who seems to have had a nerve touched and seemed to have missed the sarcasm intended by the reporters use of the word "apparently".
Ah well suppose you cant FAKE IT forever.”

“I liked the idea, just not the night sorry . I do believe that getting up on stage is not enough you do require something else either an ability to move well or to be a natural entertainer such as a comic. Just not my cup of tea. Each to their own.”

“well i thought it was a great night in a place not used to corsetted ladies and off-the-wall entertainment, as for the horse with visuals....wow- a real artistic creation! Burlesque is a new found world for me and i was pleased to say that scarlet's night inspired and amazed me (and my boyfriend). I agree with Tempest, what a refreshing change to catwalks and fashion mags..celebrate what you've got ladies!! xx”
