BRITAIN'S cheapest new car has gone on sale and the dealer selling says that interest in it is already sky high and only set to build as drivers become more aware of the brand.

Glyn Goold, sales executive at Holdcroft Renault, on Leek Road, which is selling the Dacia brand says that customers are flocking to the showroom to buy the new Sandero supermini.

The Sandero's entry price is £5,995 and on a four year PCP finance scheme allowing for 10,000 miles a year a customer can put down a deposit of £699 and then have monthly payments of just £99.

Glyn says: "The Sandero has only just come in and already we have sold several. I think this car is going to be a huge hit with the customers around here. It is absolutely the right car for the times.''

Dacia - pronounced `datcha' - is owned by Renault and it also has a 4x4, called the Duster, and will be adding both an MPV and another version of the Sandero. For the past eight years it has been Europe's fastest growing brand rising and demand for its products have been so high that it is only now that it can build right hand drive versions for our market.

Using Renault technology, the Sandero has a choice of engines, with a turbocharged 900 cc unit and a 1.2 petrol and the popular 1.5 dCi diesel that is so eco-friendly that it is exempt from road tax.

All the cars have a three year/60,000 miles warranty with three years/60,000 miles roadside assistance but five year/60,000 miles and seven year/100,000 miles upgrades are available, costing £395 and £850 respectively.

Glyn adds: "Obviously the price is the thing that catches people's attention but what we have found as people have seen it in the showroom over the past few days is that they are then even more surprised by how big and roomy it is. It is bigger than the last generation Renault Clio and the equipment levels are high too. You can get leather trim and a sat nav so there is no shortage of luxuries if customers want them.''
