A 22-tonne bridge has been hoisted into place as part of a £6.5 million redevelopment of a park.

The Burma Star bridge was put into place yesterday by a 300-tonne crane at Crewe's Queens Park.

It marks the latest stage in the redevelopment of the 45-acre Victorian park, which will eventually house five bridges.

And the Burma Star Bridge, named in honour of the Second World War campaign, will arch over the Burma Star Island and memorial.

The structure is a tribute to the Burma Star Association, which refers to itself as the 'forgotten regiment'.

Cheshire East councillor Andrew Knowles, member with responsibility for parks, said yesterday's installation was an important part of Crewe's history.

He added: "This incredible Victorian park is slowly being brought back to its former glory thanks to Cheshire East Council and its funding partners, as well as help and support from members of the public, who have been extremely patient during renovations."
