A FAMILY of asylum seekers due to be sent back to Cameroon today have won a stay of execution.

Fred Nukagem, aged 37, Sandra Yonga Mbell, aged 29, and their three children were due to fly out this morning but their flights have now been cancelled.

The Middleport family, who were arrested on Wednesday, were still being held in a detention centre in Bedfordshire in the early hours of today.

Mr Nukagem said: "I'm very happy our flights have been cancelled."

“Having migrated to Australia over two years ago, after living in Stoke on Trent all my life i read the Sentinel most days to see what is going on, i must agree that Asylum seekers illegel or not seem to provoke more comments then any other articals covered by the Sentinel. You only have to read the comments to see that a lot of people are fed up with the soft approach by the immigration department and the continuing increasing number of asylum seekers flooding into Stoke. I believe that if you are there illegally you should be deported, they pass though many safe countrys but seem to head for England (soft touch) country that is why people are voting for the BNP, it is a protest vote. I know some people have commented about Australia i have to prove i was financially secure for a minimun of two years all our family had a battery of medical tests and police checks, and i had a skill that was considered to be in demand. I for one am glad to have left Stoke, and untill the British goverment wake up i think many more Brits will leave to.”

“I feel that in this case, whereby a father and mother face being killed, if sent home, we should show a bit of compassion. Its easy to say, send them back, but could you really, happily let them kids return, knowing that they could be left with no mum and dad. These are exceptional circumstances, and the family should at least be sent to a safe country.

I am all for tightening up on immigration, but believe when someones life is seriously at risk, they should be allowed to seek asylum, in a suitable country. I know most of you will not agree, but we all think different I suppose.”

“This can not be right. This family have been fired around the country like a pinball! Whether they should be here or not, they have human rights and should be treated with more respect. It is only last week Mr Nukagem was forced to the floor naked and restraint in front of hiw wife and family!”

“Amy, yes, Britons living abroad may claim benefits in those countries, but I'll bet virtually all of those Britons are working there, or living of British pensions. No-one begrudges this family or any other wanting the best, but what people can't stand is spongers, whether they're white British or foreign, regardless of colour. It's great that you love interacting with different cultures, etc., but try going to some other countries without a job or money & see how far you'll get! If you expect British tax-payers to fund spongers without complaining, I think you're being quite naive.”

“You cannot blame this family for wanting the best for their children, here or cameroon??? anyway this country may be soft, but it is not just the UK who have this problem, and as a British citizen we can go anywhere in the eu to live and guess what some britons go abroad and claim benefits, I plan on going abroad to live in a few years because I hate some british peoples attitudes such as them who support the BNP, its not any foreign persons fault the current state this country is in, it is a mess, but I do love how I can interact with many different cultures and nationalities. This family probably dont live a great life in middleport, I just wish them the best when they return home, those who just say send then back, just think for a moment how privileged you are for being born in the EU.”

“So Walker you're trying to convince me & everyone else that you have some insight & intelligence on this matter, fine, but just how many immigrants legal & illegal do you think the UK should take in then? Stop while the goings good or keep taking everyone in till the countrys infrastructure collapses under the strain till it's good for nothing? There's nothing petty or uneducated about my remarks, just plain common sense, something that the PC brigade seem to be lacking.”

“Whilst I am in agreement we are overcrowded and need to restrain how many people we let in as other countries do,
I think we have a duty to this family to ensure that they are at least sent somewhere safe. I am revolted by some peoples comments, just put yourself in this families shoes for a minute, it's called empathy! I have always been proud of Stoke, but I am not proud of some of its citizens EVIL comments! We have just had rememberance Sunday, just think for a minute what world war 2 was about!”

“I absolutely agree Pam. Always put yourself in the other person's position when analysing a situation. Although some will most certainly abuse our asylum laws, others would end up dead if countries such as ours didn't take them in.

Put it this way, what if Hitler *had* bombed the UK into submission back in 1941 and turned our country into a Communist State. Do you really not think a great number of families would have fled the country... probably in a North American direction?

One can only hope that, had history been different, we would have got a better reception from those in foreign lands, than asylum seekers generally get from the people of Stoke-on-Trent - if The Sentinel's comments section is anything to go by.”
