But Thompson, who struggled with hamstring injuries last season, has only managed to

score two goals in 17 league appearances including just five starts.

Current boss Micky Adams transfer-listed the striker before the start of this season, while he has since been loaned out to Blue Square North side Stafford Rangers.

Thompson’s deal was due to run out next summer but he will now leave the club with immediate affect.

The striker said: “I need to be playing games and at the present time that’s not happening.

“By taking this route it allows me to continue to my career elsewhere.

“I would like to wish the club all the best for the future and also the fans who supported me during my time here.”
