Police are continuing to hunt armed robbers who held up a bank using metal bars and axes.

Offenders entered Lloyds TSB in The Strand, Longton, just after 2pm today with weapons before demanding money.

The offenders made off with an undisclosed amount of cash in a grey-coloured Seat Leon which has been found abandoned nearby.

There were a number of members of staff and customers in the bank at the time. Two women sustained minor injuries and are now going to hospital to be checked over.

The bank has been cordoned off by police and a search of the immediate local area is underway for the offenders and any discarded items.

Officers are taking statements at the scene.

Detective Inspector Jason O'Toole said: "We need to locate these offenders as quickly as possible."

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Stoke-on-Trent CID on 0300 123 44 55 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“I walked past just after it happend as i was actually heading there to put some money in! so glad i was running late!
It was on the strand just up from wrights pies.
There was one police car on the scene at first, then 10 mins later (once i had been to the post office) 3 more arrived, plus an ambulance and a helicoptor. Glad nobody was seriously injured.

However i think its amazing how these criminals had the guts to rob a bank that is a 1 minute jog from the police station. Just shows how reliable the police force are deemed.”

“I doubt the police will have time to deal with this as there resourses always seem stretched they might arrive sometime mid week next... they are probably dealing with to many speeding drivers and issuing tickets to them than interested in a bank robbery.”

“Singnal1 said it was Market Street and that a bank customer went to a nearby cafe very shaken. The article says The Strand. So which one was it? Whichever one though, it's still bad news and I'm grateful that no-one was seriously hurt.”
