The Necrotising Enterocolitis bowel condition affects one in 2,000 premature babies.

Now parents Richard and Heather Boon are helping to raise money for Leighton Hospital to thank the staff who helped care for Henry.

Their first child, Oliver, who is now five years old, was also cared for at the Crewe hospital after being born 10 weeks premature.

Richard, aged 36, of Scholar Green, said: "Oliver arrived a little earlier than expected, weighing 3lb 5oz, but he was absolutely fine and is still doing well. But things have been a lot different with Henry, we have had a lot of issues with him.

"He was a little smaller than Oliver at 2lb 15oz and at first we weren't too worried until doctors told us about the bowel condition.

"He was diagnosed with it while he was at Leighton Hospital and had to be taken to Alder Hey for specialist care.

"He is still there now and so far he has got through it, but he has had five operations and still has more to come, but we are comforted by the fact he is in the right place.

"We have been told the condition affects one in 2,000 premature babies and on average, one in every four babies die from it."

This month's fund-raising raffle is being supported by Talke-based automation company NISCAM, where Richard is a director.

It has been organised to raise money for Leighton Hospital's One in 11 appeal which aims to raise £1 million for a new neo-natal unit.

Richard added: "They have only got four incubators at the hospital and this money will go a long way to help other families, so we thought we would do our bit to help them.

"It is the first time we have done any fund-raising, but we are planning to put on a few more events."

The raffle takes place on Monday, October 15 at 10.30am at NISCAM's Coalpit Hill building.

Prizes include match tickets for Manchester City vs Real Madrid in the Champions League, a television, an iPod nano, whisky and biscuits.

Claire Stanton, Richard's secretary at NISCAM, said: "Henry is still in hospital but progressing each day thanks to the dedication and brilliance of the doctors and nurses.

"As a thank you for their work we are holding a raffle and auction to raise some funds. We have sold more than 1,000 tickets."

Tickets are £1 each and can be purchased from NISCAM by emailling claire.staton@niscam.com or by calling 01782 794087.
