Boy hit by propeller in Cornwall boat accident is on his way home
A SCHOOLBOY who suffered serious leg injuries in a boating accident is due home today.
Tyler Cope was released from hospital in Cornwall on Friday after undergoing two operations following the incident.
The 14-year-old, from Kidsgrove, pictured, and his uncle Ian Cope were thrown from a motorboat after it was hit by a freak wave in Pentewan Sands near Mevagissey on August 27.
Mr Cope, a 41-year-old from Knypersley who was struck in the face by the boat's propeller, remains in the Royal Cornwall Hospital, in Truro, after suffering serious head injuries but could return to North Staffordshire this week.
The propeller hit Tyler, a pupil at Maryhill High School, in Kidsgrove, on his leg.
His dad David was on the beach with other relatives, including his brother Ian's children, at the time of the accident.
David told The Sentinel this weekend that his son was looking forward to coming home.
The 44-year-old from Kidsgrove said: "Tyler came out of hospital on Friday but wanted to stay the weekend in Cornwall with my parents to make sure Ian was OK.
"He's doing all right. He's in a wheelchair and has to learn how to use crutches because his leg's in plaster.
"We don't know how long it will be in plaster until we see doctors at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire next week.
"He's just glad to be coming home. It's been a very worrying week."
Mr Cope told The Sentinel the family were hoping Ian would be transferred to the University Hospital early this week.
The experienced boater suffered bleeding on the brain.
He also had to have metal plates put in his skull and his eye socket rebuilt.
His brother said: "Ian had a bit of a relapse because there were problems with his blood pressure and he fainted a few times. He's not well enough to travel at the minute.
"He collapses when he stands but he's improved. You can have a conversation with him now.
"A few days ago he couldn't remember what he'd said two minutes before.
"Hopefully it won't be long before he's recovering at home."
