Bowls: Dilhorne ladies on song for Sentinel success
DILHORNE triumphed in The Sentinel Charities Foden Doubles final after seeing off the cream of the county's ladies' teams.
Chris Adams and Carol Matthews ensured the silverware was taken to the Moorlands after sauntering to a 21-4 victory over Fegg Hayes duo Paulette Wheeldon and Julie Burgess.
Adams and Matthews had a far tougher time in the semi-finals, where they trailed Marie Stretch and Esme Thomas, of Milton Recs, 17-10 before storming back to win 21-17.
Eight teams made it through to the finals of the annual competition.
Sunday's climax, held at Florence Tennis and Bowls Club, followed weeks of qualifying rounds that involved more that 30 teams.
Sylvia Holmes, president of the Staffordshire Ladies' Bowls Association, was delighted with the quality of play on display in the competition.
"I was very pleased with how the day went considering the weather," she said.
"All but one pair were First Division bowlers and it was pretty evenly matched throughout. There was never going to be any easy games."
Holmes represented Birches Head Hotel in the contest, but lost to the eventual winners from Dilhorne 21-17.
NORTH Staffordshire Parks men's teams enjoyed a fantastic set of results in the inter-county championships.
The senior team notched an 18-13 victory over Birkenhead following home and away fixtures.
The veterans took on Cheshire where they did enough in the home leg at Fegg Hayes and the away tie in Stockport to run out 16-11 winners.
But it was the junior side who put in the most impressive showing of the day by thrashing Birkenhead 20-7. In the away tie, held at Pensby, Staffordshire won all 10 matches.
David Butler, general secretary of the North Staffs Parks League, said: "They were good results for all the teams involved."
