The Sentinel

This is an isolated walk with splendid views in the latter half.

The journey:

FROM the car park walk south to the crossroads. Go straight across to Blore to take the first footpath on the right. Follow the Tarmac from the Church entrance to the gate on the left but do not go through, instead turn right following the fence to a small exit in the corner (private signs are adjacent on the other side of the boundary).

Cross the house drive and go slightly left across the lawn to a stile in the corner. Go over and ahead, keeping the wall on the right, then slightly left to follow a path along the centre of the valley. Cross two walls then you reach a road. Turn left. Ignore the first footpath on the right and at the next, take the footpath on the left opposite Waterings Farm. Keep to the right edge of the field and at the end cross the next field aiming for its top left corner.

Go through a stile, keeping the wall on the right to the far end of the field, then turn right through a gateway then half left to cross the field (aiming for the farm) soon reaching a wall coming in from the left.

Go over the next stile along the top edge of a camping field to exit near a farmhouse. Follow the path then turn right, towards the farmhouse, but just before take the waymarked path on the left to cross a small field alongside a play area. Turn right to pass the end of the building to reach a main road. Cross and turn right.

The next section is tricky to navigate and could be muddy. Avoid it by turning left along the main road to the phone box on the right and bus shelter on the left.

For the main route walk a few yards to the first drive on the left and a footpath sign. Follow the track to just before the house. On the right there is a gap with two field entrances then the house fence. Go through this gap to go along the left edge of the first field. At the far end it is overgrown but there is a gap. Go through this and turn right and you should see a stile (as an alternative it may be possible to go down the rightside of the adjacent field and keeping your eyes peeled you will see the stile through a gap in the hedge). Go over this and cross the left side of the next field to cross another stile and emerge in a field. There is a stile on the left but ignore this and continue ahead along the length of the field to reach a squeeze stile before a farm.

Navigation is now easy again. Follow the road back to the main road and cross over.

There is a pub on the right for refreshment.

Note a phone box on the left and bus shelter on the right. Cross here and in a few yards take the footpath on the right. Go over the stile and cross to the power pole which has two waymarks.

Take the right path, following the line of wires to the corner of the field. Go through the stile then half right to cross the next field, aiming for a gap in the right hedge. Go through the gap then aim for the wooden gate in the hedge ahead.

Go through the gate past a derelict building on your right. Bearing right , cross the field and go over the ridge. The next stile is to the left of the metal gate. Go through this then aim for the right end of the farm below.

You emerge on a lane and turn left. Soon note a path on the left. Just after this is a gate on the right and footpath sign. Go over and diagonally cross the next field, descending to a gap where four hedges meet at the bottom of the valley.

Go through this and up the other side, keeping to the middle of the field then to the electricity pole.

Continue ahead to a stile and road. Turn left, then at the next junction, turn right, to go back to the start.
