Beth through to final
BETH Tweddle reached the uneven bars individual final –
despite leaving the National Indoor Stadium in tears.
The 23-year-old former Crewe and Nantwich star, who won
World Championship gold in the same discipline in 2006,
faltered during the competition as she dropped two crucial
points and found herself in fifth place with five hours of
competition still to go.
But after an agonising wait, Tweddle received the news that
she had scraped through to next Monday's final in eighth place
– a result which delighted head coach Colin Still. "I would
have been gutted for Beth if she didn't make the final," he
said. "She has given four years for this moment.
"She wasn't at her best and was off centre right from the
first skill, and then the timing was wrong on the downswing and
clipped her heel, she did well to make it from there."
But it wasn't all good news for Tweddle with her slip up on
the uneven bars contributing to Team GB's failure to reach the
final of the team event.
In a similar situation to Tweddle's individual frustration,
Team GB found themselves in fifth spot with Russia, Germany,
Ukraine, France and Brazil, all yet to enter the stadium.
And there was to be no last-minute reprieve this time around
as Japan, the eighth-placed team, edged out GB by just 0.75 of
a point.
