HUNDREDS of jobs have been created after luxury car maker Bentley secured two Government grants.

The Crewe-based firm is now looking to fill 250 posts after receiving more than £4.5 million from the Regional Growth Fund (RGF) last year.

It received £1.69 million towards training new workers, and £3 million towards engine research and development.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg visited Bentley's Pyms Lane headquarters yesterday to announce the second grant had been officially signed off by ministers.

The firm revealed the first grant had helped create 500 new production jobs, of which half had been filled.

And the second grant is helping to safeguard around 200 engineering roles at its research and development facility.

Mr Clegg said: "It is fantastic to be announcing 500 new and 200 protected jobs here in Crewe.

"This is a world-beating company and a lot of people rely on it for employment."

Bentley employs just under 4,000 people at Pyms Lane. Last year it sold 7,003 cars around the world, up 37 per cent compared with 2010.

Asked whether such a successful businesses needed Government support, Mr Clegg said: "The idea behind the RGF is that we work in partnership with successful companies like Bentley who have said that they would employ more people with the help of this money than they would otherwise."

Bentley chairman and chief executive Wolfgang Dürheimer said he was "delighted" to welcome the Deputy PM to Crewe.

He said: "We are greatly encouraged by his comments that the manufacturing sector and companies like Bentley have a key role to play in developing a stronger and more balanced economy."

Mr Dürheimer said the RGF cash was helping ensure Bentley has the skilled workforce it needs to remain globally competitive, and supporting an engine development project that will help it expand in new and existing overseas markets.

He added: "Bentley has had a fantastic start to 2012 and our sales show there is huge global demand for high-quality luxury automotive products manufactured in Crewe."

Michael Straughan, board member for manufacturing, said: "Winning the RGF money sends a powerful message back to our parent company VW that Britain is very serious about manufacturing and that Bentley has a real future here in Crewe."

The RGF has provisionally awarded £1.4 billion to 176 projects across the country, which the Government says will lead to 330,000 jobs.

Other firms in the region to have benefited include Middleport pottery manufacturer Steelite, which is to receive £2.1 million towards a new £12 million factory.

“For what it is worth Bentley is not a British company it is owned by Volkswagen Germany.”

“Does anyone know what the international laws are governing the funding to industry by a nation within its own geographical boundaries? During my years at Stoke-on-Trent City Council when alluding to this subject I certainly never got a straight answer from anyone!

“I seem to recall that a very large manufacturer of orthopedic shoe inserts wanted to build a brand new hi-tech eco friendly factory in the city creating skilled work for hundreds of people and that they repeatedly had planning permission for a brownfields site denied. Being a large company from outside of Stoke On Trent they were not prepared to play the bribery and backhanders game as that kind of nonsense stopped more than 20 years ago in most real cities. What did the company do? they pulled out of the city entirely and took their business elsewhere as they had learned to their cost what the rest of the country knows - that Stoke is a backward and xenophobic place for outsiders to do business in - and by xenophobic I am not refering to immigrants but simply anyone from another part of the country who pronounces their double oh's properly. The council managed to turn a development that should have created a positive employment figure into one that actualy created a negative one, putting people out of work for no good reason. Well done Stoke - yet again. And we wonder why Bentley don't want to trade from here?”

Cheshire council are better than Staffs one, who do not seem to care about disabled people who want to work.”

“Much better for Gov handouts to go to companies that will provide real jobs rather than giving it to the workshy like the previous Gov.

“That you consider people on benefits Wayne & Waynetta kind of tells me all I need to know...

We are being told public sector jobs aren't real jobs, so how many jobs at Bentley are public sector if the government funds them to the tune of £4.5 million?”

    Alternatively, just snipe at me.”

As you appear to be on this site 24/7 I presume you are unemployed, maybe you should apply for a job there instead of constantly whinging.”

“I think business and economics basics are lost on you Tony.

Your concern for the tax payer and businesses getting 'handouts' is now irrelevant, as long as they make incubators for babies???”
