Barnes still gunning for leader's role
EMBATTLED Labour leader councillor Mike Barnes insists members are backing his bid to become leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, despite two high-profile resignations.
Mr Barnes said everyone in the city's Labour group was saddened by the resignation of councillor Dave Conway on Monday night.
Mr Conway's departure came just days after party stalwart, councillor Joan Bell, also left the group.
And former group leader councillor Joy Garner is still considering her future after resigning as whip.
Mr Barnes said: "Dave Conway's contribution will be sadly missed by the Labour Group. He has made his choice and I respect his views."
He added: "There is a determination within the Labour Group and Labour Party to pull together and move forward for the benefit of the people of Stoke-on-Trent."
Mr Barnes is one of five candidates standing for election as council leader on Friday.
