Bag a gift in historic market town
VISITORS to the thriving market town of Newcastle can expect a welcoming atmosphere and a traffic-free environment this festive season.
The bus station provides great transport links and there are several pay and display car parks. There is also free parking on council car parks after 2pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from Wednesday, November 28 until Saturday, December 22.
Markets have been held on The Stones in the middle of Newcastle for more than 900 years and the historic town is still a great place for shoppers to visit on market days, which are run six days a week.
The popular outdoor market has a wide range of stalls offering antiques, clothing, perfume and furniture. There is also the traditional fruit and veg stalls, where shoppers can pick up the veg for their Christmas dinner.

Castle Walk, the High Street and Ironmarket form a shopping area filled with big-name retailers and independent boutiques. The town provides Christmas shoppers with the opportunity to browse around shops such as New Look, Scotts, Laura Ashley, Boots and WHSmiths.
The town also has an indoor shopping mall, the Roebuck Shopping Centre, on the High Street. The shopping centre boasts a selection of high street and local specialist stores, including big-name favourites such as Dorothy Perkins, Next and Argos. And for the football fans it also has a Stoke City FC club store.
November 28 will see an array of events in Newcastle it is the town's big Christmas Light Switch On – this year's theme being local sporting heroes. International women's cricketer Danielle Wyatt and a Stoke City footballer will be switching on the lights.
Shoppers can also be entertained by local choir Loud-Mouth-Women, on Wednesday, December 12, the Salvation Army on Sunday, December 16 and Marmalade on Wednesday, December 19.
