A PUSHCHAIR has been sent off for tests after it collapsed and left a baby under observation for a possible brain injury.

McKenna Williams-Smith, aged 13 months, fell about three foot down a set of concrete steps when her pushchair collapsed outside her grandmother's home.

An ambulance was called and took her to hospital but she was later given the all-clear and sent home with bruises and grazes.

Her mother, 19-year-old Victoria Williams, who paid £100 for the pushchair two months ago, has since returned it to Toys R Us at Festival Park and it has been sent off to be checked.

The part-time play centre worker, of Dawlish Drive, Bucknall, said: "I can't believe it happened, I thought she would be safe in there but obviously not."

Miss Williams was about to go to the shops with her partner Ben Smith and McKenna when she nipped back into the house and the incident happened.

Mr Smith, McKenna's dad, was at the bottom of the steps and saw the events unfold.

The 20-year-old builder, also of Dawlish Drive, said: "The pushchair just went, I don't know why.

"It collapsed and fell down the stairs.

"McKenna started crying straight away and blood was coming out of her nose."

Miss Williams said: "Her head hit the floor first and then the pram collapsed on top of her.

"McKenna's face was a right mess.

"The doctors said she was lucky to get away with grazes and not a bleed on the brain.

"She was a healthy baby before this so I hope she doesn't have any problems in the long run."

Miss Williams added: "McKenna won't let go of people now when she is anywhere near a pram.

"I'm really angry that this had happened."

If tests flag up a fault in the pushchair, Miss Williams and Mr Smith will be offered a full refund.

The couple have also been given a replacement pushchair to use while the tests are being carried out. However, they have said they will not use it.

A Toys R Us spokesman said the company was concerned about the incident but had not received any other complaints about Silver Cross pushchairs.

He added: "I can confirm we have the customer's pushchair and are looking to investigate and resolve the issue as soon as possible."

“I have to argee with Daz, even though he's in that god forsaken land. This story is a non-story untill the facts are known. It paints Toys Are Us in a very bad light, when it may not be a problem they could do anything about, Miss Williams could in fact be to blame, she could have waekend the frame in some way or not erected it right, any number of things could be at falt. The main thing is that the child seems to be ok.”

“Why are the Sentinel reporting this incident when no-one knows what happened yet?

Wait until it has been investigated and then report the facts!”
