Crewe man arrested following death of teenage biker in Kidsgrove
A MAN has been arrested following the death of a teenage biker at an accident blackspot.
The motorcyclist was detained by police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after an incident in Kidsgrove.
The 25-year-old from Crewe was later bailed until October 18.
The arrest came after a 17-year-old, who was also from Crewe, died after colliding with a car in Kidsgrove Bank at 7.30pm on Wednesday.
The accident happened on a bend in a steep section of the road, which has been the scene of several crashes.
Though the cause of this accident is not yet known, residents living nearby say speed cameras are needed to prevent further accidents.
Sam Timmis was at home in Kidsgrove Bank when the sound of the crash brought him out on to the street.
The 61-year-old said: "I just heard a bang. I saw the motorbike and a car. I didn't see where the rider was and it was only later that I found out that he was further down the road."
He said the road could be "lethal", especially when it had been raining.
Mr Timmis added: "We've been asking for speed cameras and crash barriers here for years.
"They've got the cameras at the bottom of the bank, but that's the wrong place.
"It's actually worse coming up the bank. Once they get past the speed cameras they often put their foot down.
"The camber goes the wrong way as well, which can throw you off the road."
Neighbour Terry Brown believes a speed camera in the right position may have prevented Wednesday's accident.
The 43-year-old said: "I've been living here for 20 years and there must have been about 40 accidents, although none of them have been fatal until now.
"Every wall except ours has been knocked down by cars coming off the road.
"All the past accidents have been down to speed."
The teenager, who police have not yet identified, but who was yesterday named as 'Jay' in floral tributes at the scene, was riding his black Aprilia downhill when he collided with a red Citroen Xsara travelling the other way.
Paramedics and two doctors were sent to the accident scene, but there was nothing they could do.
The man driving the Citroen was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire suffering from minor injuries and shock.
Witnesses are urged to contact Sergeant Jason Bromley, at Kidsgrove Police Station, on 0300 123 44 55, quoting incident 678 of September 1.
