Athletics: Athletes prepared for hectic road runner schedule
THE North Staffs Road Runners Association are anticipating an exciting year ahead after recently having a record turn-out of members in the Alsager five-mile road race.
A total of 167 members completed the event confirming that, after 38 years, the association is still going strong, as they look forward to their 39th season of 22 events.
The calendar covers all distances from four miles up to 20 miles.
Participation in the championship is based on the 12 best results from any of 20 races.

The first 20-mile road race is the Stafford 20 on Sunday, March 10, with the only other race over this distance being the South Cheshire 20 on Sunday, September 15.
One of the most popular distances in the calendar is the half-marathon.
This year there are five, with the pride of place going to the Potters 'Arf on Sunday, June 9.
The Leek half-marathon returns on Sunday, August 18, after last year's cancellation, while other races over this distance are the Stafford half (March 17), the Uttoxeter half (May 5) and the Congleton half (October 6).
Another favourite distance is 10 kilometres, the first of which is the South Cheshire race on Sunday, March 31; however this is a reserve event, along with the Dave Clarke 5k on Thursday, August 22, which will only count if any of the other events are cancelled.
One of the most popular and long-standing races in the area is the Newcastle seven-mile, which has been changed for the first time this year to a 10k race for safety reasons, and will take place on Sunday, April 14.
The remaining 10k races are Clayton 10 on Wednesday, May 15, Stone St Michaels 10 on Sunday, June 23, and the Berry Hill 10 on Tuesday, July 2 which, along with the Staffs Knot 5k on Wednesday, August 14 is the only race partially off road.
There is only one 15k event, the Meerbrook race on Saturday, July 27.
The remaining longer races are the Trentham 10 miles to be held at Tittensor on Sunday, July 21 and the final race of the year the Flying Fox 10 miles at Stone on Sunday, November 3.
The remaining short events are the Westbridge 5 (June 2), the Cheadle 4 (July 14) the Ipstones 5 (September 7) and the St Thomas 7 (September 22).
The presentation of awards evening for 2012, which was cancelled due to snow last month, will now take place at the St Leonards Hall, Stafford on Friday (8pm).
