Alton Towers to take on 1,200 new workers ahead of new ride opening

MORE than 1,200 jobs are up for grabs as Alton Towers launches its biggest ever recruitment drive.

The theme park is expecting a surge in visitor numbers when its new ride opens.

And it is now trying to fill the vacancies ahead of the start of the new season on March 12.

Most of the positions are in the food and beverage department and ride operations team and a small number of retail positions are also up for grabs.

Kerry Alcock, resort recruitment manager, said: "We are looking for 200 more people than last year because we have a fabulous, and currently still top secret new ride opening and three new Burger Kitchen restaurants."

Alton Towers, which now boasts more than 50 rides and attractions, has already received more than 2,000 applications.

Kerry added: "The calibre of candidates is also much higher because people are recognising the excellent opportunities for development that we offer.

"As always, we will be looking for outgoing people with great communication skills because we look for personality over qualifications every time.

"It is crucial we find people who will fit the culture of our business."

Alton Towers employs 1,120 people on a permanent basis across its two hotels and the park.

It is also recruiting for around 40 permanent roles including chefs, housekeeping and hotel restaurant workers.

The attraction has not yet released full details of its latest rollercoaster, which currently has the code name Secret Weapon 7 (SW7).

It features a 30-metre drop and a track three times as long as resort favourite Oblivion.

The 165-second ride promises speeds of up to 85kph.

Also new for this year is The Burger Kitchen – which will create 150 jobs alone – and will serve food and drink from three locations around the park.

Stephanie Wyse, who makes an annual trip to the theme park, has welcomed the new jobs.

The 20-year-old, of Penkhull, said: "Every year Alton Towers introduces something new, either a brilliant ride like Thirteen or Oblivion or a new restaurant.

"It is a great way to encourage visitors to go back each year, so it is no surprise that there are so many jobs available."

Alton Towers visitor Paul Beaty, aged 39, of Crewe, added: "At a time when there aren't a lot of jobs around it is great to hear about all of these opportunities. It is especially good news for young people who will get the chance to have some experience."
