Ada Hopkinson murder trial starts
A MAN has gone on trial accused of murdering 97-year-old Ada Hopkinson.
Benjamin Brough, formerly of Shaw Place, Leek, appeared at Stafford Crown Court this morning.
Mrs Hopkinson was found seriously injured at her home on Shirburn Road, Leek, on March 18, 2005.
She remained in hospital until her death in February 2008 .
Brough, aged 21, was found guilty of causing Mrs Hopkinson grievous bodily harm with intent in May 2006.
He had attacked her after breaking into her home to burgle it.
Following Mrs Hopkinson's death, Brough was charged with her murder.
The court heard today that Mrs Hopkinson died from peritonitis due to a leak from her feeding tube.
The prosecution alleges that the attack significantly contributed to her death. See tomorrow's Sentinel for more on this story.
