Craig Kirby, head of approvals and veterinary advice at the FSA, said: "I was shocked by the footage and that is why we took immediate action to make sure the individuals involved could not continue to slaughter animals."
The abattoir said in a statement that incidents in the undercover footage were 'not the norm but of an isolated nature'.

“In 2013 it saddens me to greatly think that such neglect and abuse can still happen!!
It is just a blessing that Hillside Animal Sanctuary were able to bring this neglect and abuse to the public's attention. I have never read anything so appalling and hope I never do again.....the images regarding this issue are both very distressing and disgusting.”
