A500 closes northbound after Basford accident
The A500 was closed northbound after a two vehicle accident near the Basford roundabout this afternoon.
The D road closure resulted in congestion as far back as the Sideway Roundabout.

Traffic was diverted off the carriageway using entry and exit slip roads.

That's a fascinating comment. Tell me, what lies behind that need? (to shut off a road)

"The sooner they widen that stretch to three lanes the better." -unquote.
Probably true. But whenever I see reference like this re its congestion problems -I'm always taken back to 1977 when the 'D'-Road opened.
People were so set in their ways... their routes home -the old A50 through the Potteries in particular -which is what most of the D-Road 'shadowed' (from the Stoke end anyway, the road was like a 'ghost road' -with barely anyone on it.
That scenario seemed to go on for at least a year -There were letters in the Sentinel arguing that it was a waste of money because it was 'TOO OUT OF THE WAY'.
Then slowly the penny dropped... And within a couple of years most people were on it; and now, with the big increase in volume over the past two decades especially, it hasn't enough lanes to cope -But that still only applies to 'rush-hour'.”

“Couldn't see much when I came the other way, full closure seems a bit OTT but then there's no hard shoulder so difficult to move things out of the way”

“Considering that that stretch is normally pretty congested and slow-moving this time of day, I doubt this accident will be very serious. I hope so anyway.

“Schools closed for half term... Still tough though -mind bending queuing from Sideway A50 junction to freedom and north of Basford.
Depending on your destination... there are alternative routes to use instead of passing through the Sideway A50/A500 intersection; normally slower, but ....'any port in a storm'.”

“This is a simple statement, useful, but not a news item. So few facts. Sentinel, tell us when the road will reopen. Then, what sort of accident; any people hurt? Much damage? Some of us have friend and relatives using that road.”
