PARAMEDICS have been banned from wearing "novelty" socks because health bosses think it is unprofessional.

Staff at North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) have been told they can no longer wear socks decorated with cartoon characters, jokes and garish patterns.

The move is part of a new dress code policy that bans wrist watches, visible body piercing, excessive make-up and certain tattoos.

A uniform and protective clothing are provided by the service for frontline members of staff. The allocated uniform includes "plain, dark-coloured" socks and specifically indicates "no novelty socks to be worn when visible to the public". Staff could face disciplinary action if they fail to follow the code.

Jonathan Fox, spokesman for the Association of Professional Ambulance Personnel, said: "I am a strong supporter of staff having to adhere to a dress code, but this is taking it too far."

NWAS director of organisational development, Jon Lenney, said: "We do not feel that 'novelty' socks are appropriate for presenting a professional image."

“I have to say, I agree with the Ambulance Service.
If you wear a unifrom, then you ought to wear it correctly.
It matters not if the officer is competant or not. It is the perception it gives isn't it?
If a police officer came knocking at you door in a filthy dirty car, with her hair styled as though he were in a boy band, covered in tatoos and piercings, wearing a unifrom that wasn't ironed and bright pink socks - what would your first reaction be???!!!!!
I know what mine would be.Andy”

“How B****Y pathetic! Who actually gives a s**t what they wear on their feet. So if ever we have an emergency in our house and we need to call on their services have we to, first inspect their footwear and if they dont come up to spec, do we say sorry you cant touch me you're unproffesional! What a crock!
If ever I should need them I wouldnt care if they were stark ruddy naked as long as they saved me or mine!!!”

“Warren, what a good idea - sock in the glove box - or even novelty gloves hey? If my child needed a paramedic yes, novelty socks would help, as a distraction strategy! Scott, - we are on the same wave length here mate. Joking aside - would an adult really be bothered though, what socks, pants, or vest the paramedic was wearing, I really don't think so!”

“Warren you state that the world does not revolve around kids, however, nor does it revolve around the self centred adult either. If the wonderful paramedics who attended to my daughter were wearing novelty socks she would have noticed or indeed have them pointed out to her as a distraction strategy by us. When a child is frightened it can be a sense of comfort to them. I am old enough to realise that in my hour of need something as simple as novelty socks would not detract from the wonderful service that they offer and would not condemn them for their 'unprofessionalism'.”

“we have to wear black socks in the hospital which i find pathetic...my socks dont affect the way i work.
managers ought to worry about patient care, not what im wearing on my feet!.
if they want us wear black they should provide us with them seeing as it is part of the uniform!!!!!!!!!!!1”
