ROADS in North Staffordshire are to benefit from additional Government funding of more than £5 million, it was announced today.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has confirmed extra cash to help councils repair ageing road networks. It will see £22 million spent in the West Midlands on top of the expected highways funding.

Staffordshire County Council will receive an extra £4.5 million over the next two years, with £525,000 for Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

The funding could be used for improvements like resurfacing, maintenance to bridges or repairing damage to highway infrastructure caused by severe weather, including recent flooding.

“The quality of most repair works carried out is shockingly poor, a ploy to ensure that the repair fails and the contractors get to do it again.

I always love the way the weatehr gets blamed. I've been fortunate to travel to areas of the world with much worse weather and yet their roads last much longer because they were constructed to a higher standard to start with.

Let's hope that they choose to spend the money wisely and not waste it on surface dressing works which certainly in my lcal area have utterly failed after just 5 months, money not well spent and residents left with roads which look a mess and offer little in the way of grip due to so many chippings loose on the roads.”
