500 jobs created by new store plan
SUPERMARKET giant Sainsbury's has submitted its plans for a huge town centre store – creating up to 500 jobs – following public consultation.
A planning application for the proposed development, on the former MFI site off Vernon Way, Crewe, has been sent to Cheshire East Council.
The 60,000 square foot store will be built on stilts, with 445 parking spaces beneath the building.
The development also includes a petrol station and new public space providing a link to the town centre, and improving access from Vernon Way.
A public exhibition on the plans was held in March, allowing residents and businesses to view the proposals.
The supermarket says 76 per cent of feedback forms it received were in favour of the project.
As part of the plans, soft furnishing store Dunelm, which is next to the vacant MFI building, would move elsewhere in the town.
A council decision on the application is likely by the end of the summer.
