50 jobs to go at university campuses
AT LEAST 50 jobs are to be axed at Manchester Metropolitan University's campuses in Crewe and Alsager.
The university today announced plans to cut a total of 127 posts among its support staff, due to the economic downturn.
Vice-chancellor Professor John Brooks said: "We are taking action now to protect the university from cuts in public expenditure and secure the jobs of the majority for the long term future.
"It is crucial that we provide students with a high-quality experience which is efficiently delivered and fit-for-purpose. In the current economic storm we are absolutely committed to pro-actively steering MMU to an even more successful future."
A 90-day consultation period over the proposed cuts has now begun with trade union leaders.

“That's a hell of a lot of support staff jobs to go. That means that the support staff left over will be given a heavier work load with no extra money. The work will have to be distributed amongst them. This also means double the waiting time for acco's when they require photocopying/typing etc. This could also mean students waiting for handouts etc. Total knock on effect down the line. There will be a lot of stressed acco's and a lot of stressed support staff. I thought that when the MMU in Alsager changed hands ...it was supposed to improve the situation not be detremental to it. Looks like the unemployment line is getting longer not shorter and there are going to be a lot more people struggling to find money for mortgages and bills. It makes the payouts people have been getting even more shameful when you think of hard working people who have dedicated their lives to their jobs being put in this state. Makes me feel sick. This country is going to the dogs.”

“Very sad...you would think that the government would help places of Further Education to help the mass unemployed to re train. Isnt it better to be in Further Education than sitting at home doing nothing??”

“Hmmm interesting... After complaints from Alsager residents, MMU Alsager scrap parking charges for the Alsager campus and now they have to cut 127 support staff jobs, due to the economy. Sounds to me that MMU were relying on that dosh to pay for staff wages, ooppsy! if i was choosing a uni to go to think i would leave MMU out of the equation, looks to me like that vice chancellor needs to start looking for a new job as don't think he's very good at this one!”
