20,203 sick days at police

POLICE officers in Staffordshire have taken more than 10,000 days off sick in just eight months.

Latest figures show Staffordshire Police's 1,991 officers have taken 10,706 days off sick between April and November.

The force's 1,173-strong police staff have taken 7,930 days off over the same period, while the 212 police community support officers (PCSOs) have clocked up 1,567 sick days.

Staffordshire Police Authority has set a target of an average of 8.5 days off sick for each of its employees in 2011/12.

Officers are currently projected to have 7.75 days off sick by the end of the year but PCSOs will hit 10.4 days and staff 8.7 days.

Chief Constable Mike Cunningham said: "Case conferences are held on a monthly basis to discuss individual cases, including long-term sickness."
